Last night, my wife and I had the pleasure of attending a University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) hockey game. As always, UNO hockey games are a great way to have fun, and last night's game did not disappoint. However, my curiosity was piqued and I couldn't stop wondering how the hockey pucks we see today came to be.

The hockey puck has a fascinating history that has evolved since the 1800’s. In these early days of ice hockey, players used makeshift pucks made from various materials of irregular shapes and sizes, making the game quite unpredictable.

Cow Dung Origins: Back when ice hockey was just starting, players sometimes used frozen cow dung as a makeshift puck. As you can imagine, these pucks didn't last very long - perhaps just one game! Amazingly, there was never a shortage of supply.

Wooden Variations: Players soon moved away from using frozen cow dung and began using wooden pucks of different shapes and sizes. These pucks could be square, rectangular, or even irregular, which added an extra layer of challenge to the game. Players had to adapt to the unpredictable movements of the wooden puck, making gameplay more dynamic and exciting. In fact, the first professional-level hockey game in 1875 was indeed played with a wooden puck.

Believe It Or Not, The First Rubber Puck Was Square: Legend has it that players took a rubber lacrosse ball and, with skillful precision, sliced off a portion of it and trimmed the edges until it formed a square rubber puck, paving the way for the round rubber puck that we have today.

Puck Regulation: It is worth noting that the National Hockey League (NHL) did not have any regulations for the specifications of pucks used in games before the 1990s. Only in the 1990-91 season did the league finally make it mandatory for all pucks to meet standardized specifications to ensure that every game is played using a consistent and fair puck.
